FROM THE DESK OF FR. JOSEPH CALLAHAN

Dear parishioners and friends,
For over 100 years, the Czech community in Cleveland has come together to celebrate the feast of St. Wenceslaus. This year, the Mass will be at 4:00 PM at St. John Nepomucene parish (Est 49th Street and Fleet Ave.), with the banquet after at Bohemian National Hall.
This celebration is a good example of the intersection between faith and culture. St. Wenceslaus is a great hero in the faith for the Czech people. He was born around the year 907. Following his father’s death, he was raised by his grandmother Ludmilla, another hero in the faith history of the Czech people. Wenceslaus became “Duke” of Bohemia in his late teens. He supported the church, brought back exiled priests and built church structures. He was popularly known as the “good King” for his works of charity. He navigated complex relations with neighboring Germany to maintain peace, angering anti-Christian and nationalist factions among the nobility. His brother Boleslaus, with other disgruntled pagan nobles, killed Wenceslaus on his was to Mass one morning. Honored immediately as a martyr, he became the patron saint of the Czech people.
We are blessed to belong to a multi-cultural parish that values the faith and cultural roots of our people. Last week, the Hispanic community in the Diocese gathered in Akron for the annual celebration of faith and culture. It is so important to remember our heritage and to share it with the new generations. We stand on the shoulders of great people!

MINISTERIO HISPANO

Joseph H. Callahan
